The Daniel Kahikina Akaka State Veterans Home officially opened in Kapolei, bringing a much-needed resource to our Veteran community. The new 120 bed home is named after the late Senator Daniel Kahikina Akaka, who spent his life supporting Veterans and their families.

On March 27, 2025, it was a special moment for Hawaiʻi. A dedication ceremony brought together community leaders, state officials, and some of the very first residents of the home. Danny Akaka Jr. gave a blessing with his mother Millie Akaka by his side. Governor Josh Green also attended and met with the Veterans who will call this place home.

This project has been over 15 years in the making. The Office of Veterans Services worked with lawmakers and other departments to turn a vision into something real. Daniel K. Akaka State Veterans Home is the second Veterans home in the state of Hawaiʻi, making Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo the first. Now that it is open, the focus turns to Maui where plans are already underway to build the next home. This is a big step forward for Veterans in Hawaiʻi.

Colonel Ronald P. Han Jr. Room Dedication: A Legacy That Lives On

One of the most meaningful moments at the new Veterans Home was the dedication of a room in honor of Col Ronald P Han Jr. He was the former Director of the Office of Veterans Services and played a huge role in bringing this home to life.

His family and close friends gathered to share memories and honor his work. His son Ronnie shared about his father’s dream to have a Veterans home on every island. Although Col Han passed away before seeing this one completed, his vision is still moving forward.

Governor Josh Green officially declared it “Col Ronald P Han Jr. Day”. A bronze plaque was unveiled with his wife Terry and their children. Everyone who spoke described him as humble, caring, and someone who always puts others first. The dedication was a small way to thank someone who never asked for credit but deserved all of it.
